Arcade Stick Artwork

After modding my Mad Catz Fightstick TE recently with the Toodles MC Cthulhu and Imp v2, I started thinking about maybe replacing the artwork on it with custom artwork as well. I put together a quick design with gimp...well, it would have been quick if I could use gimp properly.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Feel free to leave impressions and suggestions in the comments.

  1. Alright, lemme get to this finally.

First off, lemme say that if you look at the design of the regular fight stick, one question to answer is why is Ryu right between the stick and the buttons? Well, to me... it's because that's where your hands aren't when you're playing the game.

The way I see it, the spots on a joystick that stand out most as you play are unfortunately the spots that are hard to put things that look good just looking at it. They are the space between the joystick and the buttons, then the space above the buttons. Behind the joystick is a distant third... the lower left is obscured, but still better than the bottow right. Text and logos are ideal there.

'Course, you could subscribe to the Don't Look at My Stick When I'm Playing, so I Just Want It To Look Good When Not in Use theory of design as well.

Just my two cents, though. Bonus points if you get those clear buttons that you can put artwork in, and stick yin-yang orbs in them.

  2. Thanks for the tips! I hadn't thought about how it would look while I was playing. I looked around the internet some and saw on official sticks that they mostly did do what you talk about, where they keep in mind how it will look both in play and not in play. I'll be making another effort at making stick artwork with that in mind.

As for the yin-yang orbs, I actually did think about putting them in clear buttons, but decided against it.
